Since it is a big interest of mine, it was appropriate to put it here until I found the time to give Beer Brew Girls its own place. Beer Brew Girls "Tastings and Networking" Party

Beer  Brew Girls are at it again! We’re having a “Tastings and Networking” party on Saturday, April 10, 2010 to show off tastings of some of our home brews and celebrate April birthdays!  If all of our current beer projects go as planned, we should have 7 – 8 different beers to sample. Everything from a 5% Raspberry Saison named “Fancy Lady” to a ? % Dry Hopped American Pale Ale which will be named “The Lives of the Monster Dogs” which is the band planning to play at this party!

Since the home brew is limited, this is an exclusive event by invitation only. We hope to have a great turnout and look forward to getting everyone’s opinion on our beers!

Beer Brew Girls Homebrew Contest Finalist Winners

So we, the Beer Brew Girls entered our very first beer competition and we made it into the final round out of 115 beers! Not bad for our first competition! Although, we didn’t win in the top 5 positions, we are proud of our accomplishment and have the motivation to press on, make more beer to win in the future! After all, we are still somewhat newbies at it so we obviously have some things to learn but we are determined to do so!

Here are the winners of the Beermuda Triangle Homebrew contest: 1st place – Hamp Covington with Eyes of the World (Double IPA); 2nd place Josh Fallen with Heinous Belgian Saison; 3rd place Richard Roper; 4th place Bill Houey with Molly Dolly Indian Brown; 5th place Joshua Humphries.

Beer Brew Girls Beermuda Triangle Homebrew Contest Entry

That’s right folks. We, the Beer Brew Girls, have entered into our first beer homebrew competition. We figured why not? The BEERmuda Triangle Homebrew contest seemed to be a partnership between Hop City Beer, 5 Seasons Brewery Westside and Octane Coffee in Westside Atlanta, Georgia.  The entry was completely free (minus the beer we have to provide) and the winning beer will have their beer made, served and sold at 5 Seasons Brewery . Sweet!

So we decided since we really didn’t have anything to lose and possibly a really neat moment and honor to gain, we entered 3 different beers we had available. Since 3 beers were the maximum we could enter, we chose: batch # 9 – Black Bean Stout, batch # 10 – Belgian Pale Ale and batch # 8 – Raspberry Saison. All of these beers were started with extract kits but we altered the recipe in some way to make it our own. That’s why we chose to enter these particular ones.

We would LOVE to win the contest. Even the staff members who accepted our entries were intrigued by the beer names and possible flavors. The contest entry deadline was yesterday, January 30, 2010. The judging takes place this next week of February 1st. Keep your fingers crossed for us! May our beer win!

Yesterday, Saturday, January 16, 2010, was the first Beer Brew Girls Brew Saturday party of this new year! And we had a blast!! We had approximately 10 people come through our doors to get educated on beer home brewing and to sample some of our peronal homebrews we had available. All I know is, the beer started flowing, the  got beer ? hats came out and the fun times began.
We had a variety of beer home brews for sampling. Most people really digged batch # 10, Belgian Pale Ale at approximately 5%. We also had batch # 8, Raspberry Saison which some people did try and liked. This is more of a fruity tasting beer which was not everyone’s preference. Kathe Kingston, Head Brewer, and Kim Wolfe, Brewer Assistant, had batch # 9, Black Bean Stout, which most people did not try because it was a stout beer. (For the stout lovers, Black Bean Stout is a nicely carbonated stout that was brewed with chocolate and coffee. The coffee dominates the flavor but the chocolate adds to the texture and consistency of the beer.) Towards the evening, batch # 7, Fallen Angel at 8% came out and this was probably considered to be a favorite of the evening. Only 1 Three Nipple Tripel (TNT) came out for the evening which is batch # 6 and is not quite ready yet because it’s around 10.5%. According to our source, the person who consumed the TNT, ended up praying to the toilet and taking a 15 minute nap on the bathroom floor. LOL!

Overall, it was a lot of fun and we thank everyone who came out yesterday! Stay tuned for the next Brew Saturday date!!

Kathe Kingston of Beer Brew Girls Homebrew All Grain Setup

The Beer Brew Girls have officially gone to the next level of homebrewing with a new all-grain mash tun and brew stand setup. Kathe Kingston, the Master Brewer for the Beer Brew Girls, built this contraption herself from some research and general knowledge of how to build things. And, Kim Wolfe, the Assistant Brewer, took this picture

On New Year’s Eve day, we brewed our first all-grain beer batch with the new homemade mash tun and brew stand.  We brewed a Extra Pale Ale for Dan, the man, our good friend, neighbor, dog sitter and more. Although Kathe had a few adjustments to make on the valves, the new equipment worked great for our first all-grain homebrew! Overall, we are now successfully making beer from scratch instead of from extract kits.

The Beer Brew Girls LOVE the Brick Store Pub which is a Decatur, Georgia favorite. We are not the only ones that love this place though. Recently there has been a book released about this pub called “Love at the Pub”. Here’s a video that talks a little about Decatur, The Brick Store Pub, and the latest book written about it.

Beer Brew Girls Raspberry Saison Bottled

Yesterday, Sunday 11/8/09, was a very successful homebrew day. We didn’t actually brew anything on this day. We had 3 different beers that either needed to be bottled or moved to a secondary fermentation.

First, we bottled “Fallen Angel”. Fallen Angel is a recommended recipe from the Radical Brewing book by Randy Mosher. We believe it is a Duvel imitator. The color is very similar and the alcohol percentage is dead on at 8%. Since Duvel is one of my FAVORITE beers, I am looking forward to this one.

Secondly, we took the Chocolate Stout from it’s first fermentation carboy and put it on a secondary fermentation with coffee beans. The coffee beans were slightly crushed and placed in the bottom of glass carboy. Then we poured the chocolate stout on top of beans. Yum. This beer will be called “Chocolate Mocha Stout”.  I believe Kathe Kingston, the head brewer, took a recommended recipe for a chocolate stout out of one of our books. Then she made it her own by adding in additional chocolate and coffee. I have been on a stout kick lately with the cold weather. I am REALLY looking forward to this one too. Ahoy!

Lastly (but not leastly), we bottled our successful second attempt of the Raspberry Saison to be named “Fancy Lady”. The first attempt grew mold. We are proud to say this batch didn’t. Since we put raspberries in the carboy of the secondary  fermentation, this particular beer may be a little chunky in places. We had a hard time siphoning out all of the liquid without getting any of the yeast and raspberry chunks. Since we are planning to have this served with REAL raspberries, we are hoping the chunks and the possible cloudiness won’t be a distraction. We will see. The thought of serving this with real raspberries just tickles my beer fancy!

Wahoo | Decatur Beer Festival 2009 Ticket

The date for the 2010 Beer Festival is NOW OFFICIAL. The 2010 Decatur Beer Festival will be on Saturday, October 16, 2010 from noon – 5 pm. The tickets for 2010 are stated to go on sale sometime in September 2010. Last year, they went on sale in August 2009. So mark your calendars now to check here for an actual release date closer to September. They only release 4,000 tickets and they go fast every year. For 2009, they sold out in 12 days however, some tickets were held back and released in beginning of October. It has been clearly stated in articles that Decatur will not be holding back any tickets for 2010.

I missed out in 2008 because I did not  stay on this date. I ordered tickets for the 2009 festival on the day tickets went on sale and enjoyed myself thoroughly. So I can’t stress enough, mark your calendars now if you have any desire to go the Decatur Beer Festival 2010. www.decaturbeerfestival.org

Behold beer batch # 6: Three Nipple Triple! This is a recipe with the name from a book we own: Radical Brewing by Randy Mosher. We  pulled from this Belgian Extract + Steeped Grain Recipe. We, Kathe Kington “head brewer” and me, Kim Wolfe “assistant”,  started this batch with the wort boiling on September 26,2009. The Original Gravity (O.G.) taken on this same day was 1090. 15 days later on October 11, 2009, we moved this batch to a secondary fermentation. The second O.G. reading on this day was 1010. If our readings and calculations are correct, we have about a 10.5 % beer? Whoa! The recipe in the book states the average alcohol content is estimated to be between 7.6 to 8.6% so did we misread and miscalculate or did we just mysteriously make a higher alcohol beer??? Who knows but we’re sticking with our calculations. We bottled this home brew beer last Saturday, October 24, 2009 after  13 days in the secondary fermentation. We tasted this batch before we bottled it and “whoa!” is right! This has a very high alcohol taste. Now we just need some carbonation and plenty of time to age. The recommended maturation process for this beer is 3 to 4 months. One of the commonly noted downfalls of brewing your own beer is patience or sometimes lack of! When making any high alcohol beers, expect months to properly allow these beers to age before you can enjoy. We will probably break into one in about a month just to see what it taste like so we can compare the taste at 2 months and then 3 months and then we officially start enjoying the beer if we let is sit longer than 3 months. This beer batch process was pretty glitch free – thank goodness!
